About Us

How Many of Mee answers a simple question: how many people in the United States have your first name? Type a name and you get an estimate of how many people with that name are alive in the US today, how rare it is, how its popularity has changed since 1880, how it splits between boys and girls, how old the people who have it are, and the states where they were born.

The site covers 104,819 first names, every name in the Social Security Administration’s baby name records.

Who runs it

I’m Daniel Hart, a full-stack software developer with more than 8 years of experience, and I live in New York. I built How Many of Mee after looking up the meaning of my own name and wanting to see how many other people share it.

Where the numbers come from

  • Births: the Social Security Administration’s national baby name records, which count every name given to at least 5 babies of the same sex in a year, from 1880 to 2024.
  • Who is still alive: the life tables published by the Social Security actuaries, which give the share of each birth year still living. Applying them to each year’s births turns a birth count into an estimate of people alive today.
  • The population: the Census Bureau’s estimate of the US population on July 1, 2024 (340,110,988), used for each name’s “1 in N” figure.
  • Meanings, origins and pronunciations: Behind the Name.

The methodology page explains each step, with a worked example and the limits of the estimate.

How Many of Mee is an independent site. It isn’t connected to the Social Security Administration, the Census Bureau or Behind the Name, and it holds no records about individual people: every figure is a count of names, never of identities.
